Reporting Services and Excel interoperability

Dear friends

I am using SQL Server 2000 reporting services.
But my customer does not like the output reports
He just want to his reports look like Excel 2007 output format or a third party tool Crystal Xcelsius Designer output format.
I am deploying the reports to a Share Point Server.
How can make dynamic reports that he like to see with/without using Excel 2007 or a third party tool.

Thanks OZ

Reporting Services strives to mimic the layout of the report in the Excel export. This means that it tries to attach report items to cells on the Excel sheet, and to do this accurately with the positions of objects appropriate to each other it has to create merge cells, which can cause problems when trying to manipulate the output from Excel. In addition, Excel features and RS features do not always map well, which sometimes results in reports that don't work in Excel the way the user intended them to.

We are aware of these issues and the problems it causes; we are looking at ways to improve the Excel export in future releases.

In the meantime, the best suggestion I have for you is to take a look at SoftArtisans OfficeWriter. It will allow you to design a report in Excel and maintain all of the Excel features in the output report, while allowing you to leverage Reporting Services for data, security, scheduling, management, etc. It works on the Excel 97-2003 formats, which can be read by Excel 2007.sql

Reporting Services add (browser) back button

Dear all,

I have a client that has 4 reports; 1 main, and 3 that are rendered when the user clicks the report data on the main report (which passes parameters to generate the other 3).

They would like to have a back button in the report header of the 3 reports (they don't want to use the browser back button).

Is this possible using a text box, then editing the navigation properties and does anyone have an example? Or am I missing something quite obvious?

Any help would be gratefully received!!

Dan

Actually I managed to use javascript:history.back(1)

Reporting Services 2000 With SQL Server 2005

Dear all,
I am using Reporting Services 2000 with SQL Server 2000 and .NET
FrameWork 1.1
My client wants to migrate the DataBase to SQL Server 2005.
The reports *.rdl are hosted by the IIS Web Server running .NET
Framwork 1.1
The question is very simple:
Can I change the SQL Server 2000 to 2005 without migrating the reports
that are under the Visual Studio 2003?
OR
Do I have to migrate the reports to 2005 as well?
Best regards,
Stefan

Reporting Services (newbie)

Dear all,

When I choose 'Reporting Services' as Server Type from Connection Manager there is nothing in the textbox. Why?

My crystal ball is currently unavailable, so please give some more information what you are doing!
Maybe you are talking about MS SQL Server Management Studio and that the dropdown "servername" gehts empty when you change servertype to "reporting services"?
|||

Yes.. I was talking about that from Sql Management Studio dialog when I select in Server Type 'Reporting Services' the textbox Server Name appears empty.

Hope that clairifies my lack of info...(between my poor english and my unknowledge)

|||

If you haven't connected to a Reporting Services server from this copy of Management Studio, the Server Name will be empty. The Server Name list is just a list of servers that you have previously connected to.

Just because you have connected to Database Engine --> SERVERNAME, it will not show up in the list for other Server Type connections.

|||

Well, I obtain the following error:

TITLE: Connect to Server

Cannot connect to SRVDESASQL2005.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The Report Services WMI Provider is not installed or is misconfigured (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)

BUTTONS:

OK

|||I would try reinstalling SQL Tools on your local PC. Looks like that may be where the problem is.

Reporting Services

Dear All,

Developed a report using Reporting services (2005)integrating Chart FX .The report is built successfully but raises an error on deployment.

Error: Could not connect to the report server.

To resolve the error in the properties of the project i had given the target server url=Http://localhost/webfoldername (installed webservices on the local server)

but still i am getting the same error.

How to resolve the error.

Regards

Mohd Sufian

Hi,

didi you figure out if the WebService is currently running ? Just navigate to http://machinename/Reportserver (or whatever you directory for webservices is) to see if something is displayed there.

Sounds like you need to configure your report server. Use the Reporting Services Configuration Tool for that purpose.

-Lukasz

|||

Thats probably like the error message is telling you. YOu have to either restore the symetric key which is used to encrypt and decrypt the report definition in the Report Server Database or if you don′t have a backup copy, delete all encrypted content in the database. AFAIK there is no way to rescue the data if the key is lost. Like Lukasz said, you can do all the administrative stuff in the Reporting Services Configuration tool. If you don′t have a valid backup of your symetric key, do this as a first step after deleting all the encrypted content.

Dear Jens,

Sorry not to post before as i had solved the problem long time back.

The problem doesnt occure because of Encryption keys.

The problem occured becuase the shared Datasource used in building the report is

is blocked by some source.so i created again the datasource after i connect to the reporting services from management studio.

Dear AIMDBA,

First go to the properties of the project.

Provide the URLSource as HTTP://Computername having the webservices installed/webfolder/

Run the report .

Now connect to the Management studion and connect to SSIS.

Import the report u developed right click and run .U will see the error.

Go to the properties and create a new datasource same as the datasource provided in the report.

Now execuete the report.

If u still can accesse the report.Browse to the Reporting services configuration

Check weather all things configured properly.

If still not working delete the encription keys and save again.Backup the encription keys.

Reporting Services

Dear all,

When I choose 'Reporting Services' as Server Type from Connection Manager there is nothing in the textbox. Why?

"Reporting Services" is not a connection manager type as far as I can see (I right-clicked in "Connection Managers" area and selected "New Connection...".

Where exactly are you choosing that?

-Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Well, just test it nothing else. Up to the moment our "bussiness as usual" doesn't requires its possibilities.

|||

I think you were probably working in Management Studio and selecting Reporting Services from the drop down list when connecting a new Object Explorer. Is that right? In which case you need to enter the name of your local report server - or just "." should do it.

Or may be I have it wrong. I guess we're not clear on where you are seeing this reference to RS. Perhaps a screenshot would help, or step by step repro of how to get to the dialog.

Reporting service starter - Guidance question

Dear All

I am just starting to look into reporting service with the goal to be able to incorporate them into my web application. I have an ASP.NET web application that serves as a front end to a database. What i would like to do is to enable my user to produce reports about the data and also also present graphics and charts about the data. The user shoud be able to select the parameters and then a report should be generated dynamicly. I looked at the official sql site and my TechED materials but there is not much that i can use.

Would anyone be able to point me to a good tutorial or a how to?Or a book....Anything would be helpful

Sincerely

Good luck. Reporting Services is horribly documented. Here is Microsofts best effort on a product they give away for free:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/technologies/rptsvcs.mspx

or for 2005

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/technologies/rptsvcs.mspx

Best thing to do is install it and play around with it yourself.

Reporting service Installation issues

Dear all,
i need some help with this problem: i'm trying to install Reporting Services
on a win2k IIS
server and when it asks me the istance of MSSQL i specify SQL login Account,
I insert the sa account with its password.
I received the following message:
"Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: not associated with a trusted SQL
Server connection."
I tried to specify a domain account but the answer is "The domain account
that you specified cannot be validated".
I've tried to use a named pipes protocol but it no works.
thxI had the same problem on a machine in our testing environment. I'm not sure
why the credentials are not passed from the install GUI correctly. Perhaps
the credentials provided there are only used in the communication to the SQL
server after the install is complete? Anyway, what I did was pass the
correct credentials in the command line. I invoked the setup by running the
following command.
(in your install root)
setup /i "(install root)\setup\rsrun.msi" RSSETUPACCOUNT=accountname
RSSETUPPASSWORD=password
Hopefully that will work for you.

Reporting Service 2000 and VS2005

Dear all:

Can I design report using VS2005 and deploy them on Reporting service 2000?

Thanks.

Reports designed with BI Development Studio (Report Designer integrated into VS 2005), can only be directly published to a RS 2005 report server because RS 2005 has additional features (e.g. interactive sort) which required incremental changes and an update in the Report Definition Language (RDL) schema namespace.

However, in many cases you can manually convert RS 2005 RDLs so that they can be published to the RS 2000 report server by editing the RDL and:

1. Change the overall RDL namespace
Replace <Report xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2005/01/reportdefinition" ... >
With <Report xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2003/10/reportdefinition" ... >
2. Remove the following elements entirely if present in the RDL file:
<InteractiveWidth>21cm</InteractiveWidth>
<InteractiveHeight>29.7cm</InteractiveHeight>

3. Remove all occurences of interactive sort in the RDL file by removing all <UserSort> elements and its inner contents.

-- Robert

|||Thank you very much Robert! This is just what I needed.|||

I have several RS 2005 reports that I've converted as you suggested to use on SQL Server 2000. Everything was working fine, until now. I am having trouble printing reports. I don't know if this has to do with the conversion. I have the same report on my localhost but I'm running SQL 2005 and I have no problem printing this report. When I convert it and run it on SQL 2000 on another machine the empty reports print, but the ones with data get locked up and I can't even view the print preview. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks, Janey

|||Thank you very much Robert! This is just what I needed.|||

I have several RS 2005 reports that I've converted as you suggested to use on SQL Server 2000. Everything was working fine, until now. I am having trouble printing reports. I don't know if this has to do with the conversion. I have the same report on my localhost but I'm running SQL 2005 and I have no problem printing this report. When I convert it and run it on SQL 2000 on another machine the empty reports print, but the ones with data get locked up and I can't even view the print preview. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks, Janey

Reporting Server Subscription Issue

Dear All,
We are facing some issue in reporting service subscriptions. In one of the
server when We create subscription to save or send report, Its giving below
error.
But reports works fine directly from the report manager.
ERROR:
Failure sending mail: An error has occurred during report processing.
Its not logging anything on the report server log file. We have configured
reports server's .config files to point to application's dll file.
Everything works fine from the report manager.
We created a report with some data from the database which is working fine
with the subscription. But when I added code to access application dll, its
not working through subscription
(though it works from report manager).
Anyone faced similar issue and able to solve, please let me know.
Thanks,
RamWhy would you change the config in such a way?
