Reporting Services 2005 - Problems displaying a report via a ReportViewer control.

I have a report that displays fine in VS 2005 (in the Preview tab), and if I hit it via a URL in IE as a deployed report. However, when I embed it in a ReportViewer control for display on a web site, I get no data back for the report. I am using an Oracle database for the data source. None of the the logs in reporting services show anything wrong, there are no events in the event viewer to indicate any problems, Oracle logs also show no problems and no errors are returned to the page when the "View Report" button is clicked.

Anyone out there have a clue? I certainly don't.

Mike

The web site is executing the report viewer control with a certain (ASP.NET) user context. Most likely this account does not have any permissions to access the installation of the Oracle client software (or the Oracle client software is not installed at all on the web server).

Check this KB article for more details how to configure directory security: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870668

I thought the same thing at first, but permissions checked out fine. I found out that the problem is a rather esoteric interaction of Div and Table HTML element display characteristics during report generation (at least that's what the MSDN article says at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms252090.aspx).

The gist of it is that when you have the ReportViewer control properties set to render Asynchronously and have the height set to a '%' value (I was using 100%), the calculated height passed in the HTML is set to '0' so no report displays. You have the choice of using a fixed height and Asynchronous rendering or a percentage height and synchronous rendering.

Reporting Services - Variables/Parameters - Is this a bug?

When creating a Reporting Services report and declaring local variables as part of your query in a dataset there is sometimes a problem. When you hit run in the Data section and the “Define Query Parameters” box pops up, all the variables are not there. Sometimes when you go to properties (…) of that dataset the parameters are gone. Is this a bug? This is happening both in RS2000 and 2005.

Thanks

?

|||Anyone?|||

Not an expert in this area of the product, but i tried it briefly on my computer - local variables are recognized when you use the generic query designer (the default). They do not appear in the parameters (as they shouldn't). Parameters that are not local variables are automatically detected and shown in the parameters.

I couldn't emulate the behavior you describe. No matter how many times I opened/closed the report the parameters were correctly recognized and the local variables were preserved.

If you're using the graphical query designer, you may be running into some problems - that component rewrites queries and sometimes makes mistakes with more complicated query structures. Unfortunately, it is a standard component that we do not control. Recommendation is to try the generic query designer and see if the problem persists. There is a button on the data tab that lets you switch from using the graphical to using the generic query designer.

Hope that helps,

this is possibly related, and everytime i encounter it i get closer to having a nervous break down.. its very very annoying to say the least..

here's what i'm getting:

i have a report that gets data from a WebService.. webservice takes 6 parameters, all are primative datatypes.

i have a set of report parameters, and a set of dataset parameters that come from the report params.

i hit the execute button, fill in my values, it chugs along and give's me my expected results in the results grid.. perfect..

i edit my dataset query and put in an <ElementPath> so i can specify a particular table, hit execute and again i get my expected results..

if i do anything ie, edit the query, change to the layout window, then go back to the data window and hit refresh, the query blows up.. i edit my dataset and on the parameters tab, there's nothing.. all gone! wow.. i put all the parameters back in again, viewed the report source, copy and paste the block of code contained in the <DataSets> node to the notepad so i dont have to continually waste time re-entering the parameters..

this seems to happen whenever i click the refresh button.. i've tried to put it in generic query designer, and do it, but the UI seems to revert back to the graphical designer..

i've been dealing with it because most of my reports only took a parameter or two..

any ideas?

EDIT:

actually, i think it might be a problem if there is an error when you type in the parameters.. ie if i have a string param called strGuid, and it craps out the webservice when i cast the string to a guid (missed a char).. it seems to wipe out the dataset parameters..

I've seen this many times, codemare & ruckazz

It will happen for one of the following reasons:

1. Your Query does not get parsed correctly i.e type error and you hit the properties button to go to parameters

2. You use a parameter that is not defined or you spelled incorrectly and go to parameters in properties

Use the Undo button (Ctrl-Z or Edit>Undo) and your parameters WILL be restored, do not save, find your flaw, fix it, save it, run it.

Reporting Options

Hello all. I am currently doing some research into options for

setting up reporting. Right now we have a server on EE that's

getting hit a bit too hard by the reports. The budget is

currently a bit low, but we already have a second server

purchased.

For our reporting, we need data that is up to date within the last 15

minutes (less if possible). Because of the potential size of some

of our transactions, I've ruled out log shipping as being too much

downtime of the reporting data while the second server is catching up

to speed. So, I'm trying to figure out what reporting options I

have left open to me.

1) I understand that for reporting purposes, a snapshot must be taken

of the mirrored server. Why are reports not able to run directly

off the mirror live (or am I mistaken?).

2) Is it possible to mirror from EE to SE (remember, low budget for the second server)?

3) How high is the overhead when doing a snapshot every 5-15 minutes (

I would think it's machine specific, but overall is it pretty quick or

prohibitive based on how often the snapshot would be needed)?

4) Is replication perhaps a better option based on how up to date the

data has to be? Are there any other options that may be available

for near-realtime reporting?

Thanks in advance for your time.

1) Mirroring occurs at a physical level so the pages are not necessarily transactionally consistent for scans to occur. Creating a snapshot runs recovery and brings the database to a consistent state.

2) Yes, but you cannot create snapshots on SE.

3) Not very high in most cases. You can make it even less by doing a CHECKPOINT on the principal shortly before creating the snapshot on the mirror as the snapshot will have to recover from the last checkpoint. There are some DDL and long transaction cases that can make snapshot creation somewhat more burdensome.

4) Replication combined with snapshot isolation level scans to do the reads on the reporting server seems like it might also be viable.

|||In general, consider Replication as a Reporting solution and DBM as a High Availability solution. Transactional replication should satisfy all of your requirements.
