Reporting Services and FXCop

When I run FxCop on an ASP.NET app that has a reference to the reporting
services web reference, I get a very long list of 'errors' that are not in
my code, but in the web service. As there isn't anything that I can do about
these 'errors' is there a way to tell FxCop to ignore the reference?
--
Brendan Reynoldswell, in the target you can expand and exlude certain assemblies/namespaces.
It's funny though, FxCop doesn't automatically check my referenced dlls.
What version are you using? Are you simply adding the 1 assembly to fxcop?

Ah! Got it, thanks! :-)
That solved the problem for me, but if you're still curious here are the
answers to your questions ...

Just the web reference, not other references.

Reporting services and existing application

Hello everyone I have a small application in asp.net now I'm trying to use the SQL reporting services. But as soon as I try to connect to the DB on the "connection properties" window I get this error.

Unable to open the physical file "C:\my\Apps\mydb.mdf". Operating system error 32: "32(The file is in use by another process.)".

\

Thanks

Looks like you are using SQLExpress and in your web site, web.config file you are directly attaching a dbf file, so it is getting used by ASP.NET worker process. But again you are trying to access it through reporting services, which is another process. So that is why you are getting this exception.

Try to modify your connection string, instead of AttachDB file name, build a proper connection string to SQL Express

|||

I change my connection string to:

<connectionStrings>
<add name="DBCSCompany" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=true;Database=C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\apps\App_Data\Database.mdf" />
</connectionStrings>

but I still get the same error

|||

Hi,

First, be sure that the physical path of the mdvb file is correct, I suggest that you shoud put your mdf file in app_code directory. so you can use "AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|someMdfFile"to locate the mdf file.

Second, when this problem occurred, just to check if other program is using the mdf file. Such as Visual Studio developpment server. If so, turn it off and try again.

Thank.

Reporting Services and .NET can not co-exist?

Hi,
I had trouble getting reporting services going. I would
get the configuration error. If I restart the IIS Admin
the reporting services works fine but my other aspx pages
get the same configuration error. Something about
Microsoft.Office.Interop.Owc. If I restart IIS Admin
again the other aspx pages work but reporting services
does not.
What is going on here?
Can't Reporting Services and other .NET pages co-exist?
Please help.
-Marciaapplications can co-exist, but not in the same virtual folder.
maybe you can try to create a new application pool dedicated to reporting
services. (this is required when installing reporting services and
sharepoint on the same server)
I've already installed RS on some computer and I never get any error.
What is the content of your web.config files? (under the RS folders and un
der parent folder)

Reporting Services 2005 in VS.2005?

We are on SQL server 2000 (sp4).
We have upgraded to Visual Studio 2005 (from .NET 2003)
We installed SQL server 2005 reporting services,
on a separate machine (separate from the machine that has
sql server 2000.
But when we open our Visual Studio 2005 IDE,
on a client machine, we can't find any template for creating a reporting
services project.
Microsoft's site has nothing but ads, I couldn't find
anything there on what to do
What do we do?
Thanks in Advance,
Laurence Nuttall

Reporting Services 2005 and .NET 2003

Hello,

Can I integrate a Reporting Services 2005 report into an application done with .NET 2003, so that I can call the report from that application?

What should I consider for the deployment of the report and the application. Can I do that? (I am asking this because for the application I use framework 1.1, and for the report I use framework 2.0, don't I?)

Thanks,

Marco

Hi Marco-

You can't do that. You need VS2005 to use SSRS2005. VS2003 only works with SSRS2000.

Regards,
Scott
|||You should be able to interact with the server via SOAP and URL Access just fine from a .NET 1.1 application. What you will not be able to do is embed the Report Viewer control directly in your application.|||

You cannot design SRS 2005 reports using Visual Studio 2003, however, you can integrate/launch them from a VS2003 application. The easiest way to get this up and running is to have a copy of SRS 2005 running on your local / dev machine. I will continue assuming this is the case. I am also assuming this is probably a web application you are writing (?) because SRS is also.
My solution below. This is certainly not the only way of acheiving this, however, it will give you a good starting point I hope. I also assume you have setup SRS correctly with a data source and also know how the folder and report structure works.

1. First you will need to add a web reference for SRS 2005.

To do this, open your project and select Project > Add Web Reference from the main menu. Next click the Browse to: Web services on the local machine link. This should list all the SOAP apps on your local machine. In the list you should see ReportService. Click on the ReportService link, give it an appropriate name (the localhost default is not recommended) and click Add Reference.

2. Next, you will need to add some code to application to create the report from a stored RDL document.

I wrote this in VB.net as an example, to make it work you will need to modify it to fit your code. You will also need to add measures for the authentication mode you are using (e.g. a Shared Data Source) although this could be dealt with in the RDL. I did not have time to test this fully so be prepared to get the spade out.

Private Function MakeReport(ByVal sRDLLocalPath As String, ByVal sReportName As String, ByVal sReportFolder As String) As String

' Create reporting services object

' Possible alternate name: Dim rs As New ReportingServices2005.ReportingService2005

Dim rs As New ReportingServices.ReportingService

rs.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials

rs.Url = "http://servername/ReportServer/ReportService.asmx"

' Read details of RDL from file

Dim oSR As IO.StreamReader

Dim sRDLDocument As String

oSR = System.IO.File.OpenText(sRDLLocalPath)

sRDLDocument = oSR.ReadToEnd

oSR.Close()

' Create the report on the server

Dim Warnings() As ReportingServices.Warning

Warnings = rs.CreateReport(sReportName, sReportFolder, True, StrToByteArray(sRDLDocument), Nothing)

' Check for errors

If Not Warnings Is Nothing Then

For Each Warning As ReportingServices.Warning In Warnings

If Not Warning.Message Is Nothing Then Throw New Exception("An error occured!")

Next

End If

Return "http://servername/Reports/" & sReportFolder & "/" & sReportName

End Function

3. Finally display the report in some way

Again some quick VB code to run this, using the code from above. Again, Mickey Mouse, sorry. You will need to be in an aspx.vb page and not a component class or similar to use the Response.Redirect, but there are better things you can do with the report URL as I'm sure you're probably aware.

Dim sReportURL As String

sReportURL = Me.MakeReport("c:\myreports\myreport.rdl", "MyReport1234", "MyReports")

Response.Redirect(sReportURL)

Reporting Services 2000, VS2005 and SQL Server 2000

I am running MS SQL 2000 and VS .Net 2005.

Is it possible to run Microsoft Reporting Services 2000 with VS2005 or am I required to upgrade the SQL server and reporting services to 2005 just to produce a few WEB reports ? This would be too costly both in money and time.

I have just finished developing a solution using the version of Crystal Reports which is built into VS 2005. However I now believe that I require costly licenses to deploy the solution on the live WEB server. Can anyone confirm this assumption (in simple terms).

There really does to be a lack of a descent, reasonable cost, solution for generating WEB reports against an MS SQL 2000 database whilst using the VS 2005 development environment. Maybe I am wrong ?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

George

Please help ...

In simple terms, I have VS2005 and am limited to MSSQL 2000 and want to generate some WEB reports. Can I use Reporting Services 2000 services to do this ?

Upgrading to SQL 2005 is NOT an option and I have a large WEB project built using VS2005 (VB).

This now all seems to be so difficult. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

George

Reporting Services 2000 With SQL Server 2005

Dear all,
I am using Reporting Services 2000 with SQL Server 2000 and .NET
FrameWork 1.1
My client wants to migrate the DataBase to SQL Server 2005.
The reports *.rdl are hosted by the IIS Web Server running .NET
Framwork 1.1
The question is very simple:
Can I change the SQL Server 2000 to 2005 without migrating the reports
that are under the Visual Studio 2003?
OR
Do I have to migrate the reports to 2005 as well?
Best regards,
Stefan

Reporting Services 2000 web-services rendering

We are using Reporting Services 2000 and we have a project in which we need to implement a security layer in a customized ASP.NET application to authenticate and authorize requests to view reports.

The client's needs are secure / restricted access via the public internet, all requests must go through the ASP.NET application (the report server URL must NEVER be visible) and the client must be able to print the report using the special ActiveX print plug-in for the reports (otherwise the Internet Explorer print functionality will seriously mess up the output)

There are two approaches we have considered with pros and cons:

a.) render the report using the ReportViewer control. The problem is, this control is just a wrapper around query-based accessing of the Report Server. This exposes the RS URL and ultimately, the resulting HTML from the RS will have SRC tags that expose the Report Server. The advantage is the client retains full functionality that the default rendering interface of RS would ordinarily have.

b.) render the report programmatically using the SOAP web service and render each individual stream. The problem with this is the development is far more difficult and we lose the customized printing functionality of the ActiveX control

We are proposing to use a variation of option a.) by having our ASP.NET page delegate a request via a HttpRequest object to the Report Server and then performing either a regex or XSLT transformation on the returned stream to replace all SRC tags to a resource into a redirect to an ASP.NET page that will be parameterized by the streamid of a report resource. This page would simply return the result as a byte stream. This would keep all the work server-side and never expose the server URL. This way we preserve the Report Server interface (and the precious print functionality) while masking the URLs.

There must be a simpler approach than the one I have described. Can anyone come up with a solution that will fulfill our requirements? Will Reporting Services 2005 fix this?

At the very least, is there a way to control the printing (without exporting to PDF) when using the web service API to render the report programmatically?|||I did something similar where we used the MeadCo ScriptX print control to modify some basic print settings (like margin, page setup, and header and footers). Just need to add a script block to the end of the rendered html to modify the print settings.|||

There is no better approach to solve the problem in RS 2000. Actually, there is still a flaw in your approach if the report contains drillthrough report (hyperlink to other reports) or subreport, it will still reveal the URL of the report server to the customer.

In RS2005, this problem is solved by the new ReportViewer control. You may get more information about the newly introduced in ReportViewer via the following website:

Reporting Services 2000 sp1

hi,
I am using reporting services 2000 sp1 with vs.net 2003. I had it all set up ok (create, deploy reports etc). The problem i have is now for some reason i cant deploy and i get the message cannot connect to server. I have not changed anythink is this a know bug or somethink else. I have tried uninstalling and installing again same problem hope someone can help.

thanks in advance

kered

It is doubtful that this is a Reporting Services issue. Something else on your environment must have changed. Perhaps a new version of the Framework, a network configuration change, security changes? Can you connect to the server in a browser window? Can you upload reports through Report Manager?|||

hi, Brian

Thanks for the reply. No i can not connect to the server in a browser window, or upload reports through the report manager. I have uninstalled it again and installed again. I get the following setup message now (Set up could not initialize the report server. You must manually initialize the report server). Browseing the net i don,t seem to be able to resolve this i hope u can help me.

thanks in advance

Reporting Services 2000 broke by installing .NET 2.0 redistributable runtime files

We have RS 2000 running in our lab environment where I recently installed the .NET Framework 2.0 Redistributable Package. After installation, reporting services stopped working with the following error:

Security Exception

Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.

Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

I noticed the Version=2.0.0.0 part and went into the IIS properties for the /Reports directory and verified that 1.1 was selected and not 2.0.

Not sure why it appears 2.0 is being referenced when the site should be pointing to 1.1 libraries.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Make sure you check both virtual folders: /Reports and /ReportServer. When you go to the properties of these virtual folders, go to application configuration and check all script maps. Make sure there's no v2.0 DLLs in the script maps.|||If you are running Windows XP or you have Reporting Services installed in the same application pool as an ASP.NET 2.0 application, then this will happen. You can't run two version of the .NET Framework in the same IIS process.|||I tried both posted solutions and neither worked, although they were good ideas. Both the /Reports and /ReportServer directores have the 1.1 binaries in the Application Mappings tab in IIS. Of interest is the /Reports directory has many application extensions listed and no wildcard maps. The /ReportServer directory has the opposite, no application extensions and one wildcard mapping. Regardless, they all point to 1.1 binaries.

I created a new application pool and put the /Reports and /ReportServer in that pool and am getting the same error.

The plugin was coded to always run in the context of the latest .net framework version. Since the plugin ran in the default application pool, every app in the default pool then would use the 2.0 framework instead of the 1.1 framework, regardless of what was set for each site.

Hope this helps.

The plugin was coded to always run in the context of the latest .net framework version. Since the plugin ran in the default application pool, every app in the default pool then would use the 2.0 framework instead of the 1.1 framework, regardless of what was set for each site.

The solution was to put the content management ISAPI plugin in its own app pool with nothing else. That allow the other apps to use the framework of their specification.

I just updated my Windows 2003 server running Reporting Services 2000 with Net 2.0 and had the same error. I solved it by just selecting the old version 1.1.4 from the ASP.Net settings under the properties tab on IIS. Seems it allows you to select which version to run at each level of a Web/Sub Web. Make sure to select the reportserver and the report sub webs.

Hope this helps.

|||I had this problem when i've installed MSSQL 2005 and tried to use ReportServer. First I've tried to disable .NET 2.0, but it didn't help. so i uninstalled .net 2.0 and restarted IIS server. it worked. after i've downloaded .net 2.0 from microsoft.com, installed it. Everything works perfect. seems like the .net packege that is distributed with SQL 2005 is broken or something like that.

Reporting Services 2000 & 2005 on same machine

How can I get the 2000 and 2005 versions of SQL Server Reporting Services
both working on my development laptop ???

I have ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0 installed on my laptop.

I have Visual Studio 2003 and 2005 installed on my laptop.

I have my default website configured for ASP.NET 2.0.

I have the developer edition of SQL Server 2000 installed on my laptop as
instance RMK006 in the MSSQL folder. I have the developer edition of SQL
Server installed on my laptop as instance RMK0062005 in the MSSQL.1 folder.
I have the corresponding versions of SQL Server Reporting Services installed
on my laptop.

I have the Reports web site and the Reports web site and ReportServer web
site configured to ASP.NET 1.1

I have the Report$RMK0062005 web site and the ReportsServer$RMK0052006
configured to ASP.NET 2.0

Entering http://localhost/reports$rmk0062005 in my web browser works fine.

Entering http://localhost/reportserver in my web browser generates the
following error:
Reporting Services Error
------------------------

The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key used to access sensitive
or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a
backup key or delete all encrypted content and then restart the service.

The only way I can seem to get 2000 Reporting Services working is to do the
following:

- run C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspn et_regiis.exe -u
- uninstall 2000 Reporting Services
- run C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspne t_regiis.exe -i
- install 2000 Reporting Services

But once I've done that Visual Studio 2005 etc no longer work.

The utlimate goal is an ASP.NET 2.0 application developed in Visual Studio
2005; the application is based on a SQL Server 2000 database and needs to
invoke SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services to run reports.

What am I doing wrong?

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED - I'M DIEING HERE AND MY CLIENT IS
LOSING PATIENCE !!!!!Look at the options for aspnet_regiis; you want to run the 2.0 version
with -i to make it the default, then run the 1.1 version again but use
the command line options to change just the web folder for SQL 2000
Reporting Services.

Reporting Services & Authentication

Hi

I'm just about to embark on a project which will use Reporting Services and ASP.net.

I need to produce about 800 individual reports which will then bemade accessible via the internet. Each report will only be accessibleto a specific user so I want to allow users to be able to logon usingan asp.net form which will then redirect them to their specific report.

I believe this can be done but how and can anyone direct me to a really good tutorial?

Many thanks

Hmm, I don't think much of this forum - nobody answers your questions. Are there any so called experts out there!?? :-(

Thankfully I have managed to find it out myself but only after some time.

This should help someone with a similar problem:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365305.aspx

plus, if you have put the RS samples on your pc look at the forms authentication sample here:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Samples\Reporting Services\Extension Samples\FormsAuthentication Sample\cs\FormsAuthentication

Hope this helps

Reporting Services - Tools

Hi there,
I am new to MS Reporting Services and would like to know if there is a way to add more controls to the tool box in vs .net to put variety of controls on the rdl reports. for instance by default the toolbox doesn't have a dropdownlist control. If there is a way of doing so, would someone please tell me how?

Thank you.
Because Reporting Services is output independent and we don't have an eventing model, you can't use regular VB or ASP controls on the page. We are looking at ways of making this possible in the future.

In SQL 2005, we have what is called 'Custom Report Items', which are Reporting Services specific controls. We expect that there will be serveral third parties offering these, including an enhanced chart from Dundas Software. See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/2005ssrs.mspx for some information about Custom Report Items.

Reporting Services - Question Please

Hello:

We've all heard of the uproar with SQL Server 2000's new feature: Reporting Services. I just have one question:

I have VS.NET 2002 at my place of employment, thus does this mean I won't be able to use Reporting Services? To use this new feature, i.e. Reporting Services, I will need VS.NET 2003 on one of the client machines, correct? Or, if I only have VS.NET 2002 (current), does this mean I can still install Reporting Services, but not be able to use the Report Designer part of Reporting Serivces?

Any feedback WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!Nevermind, I have found my answer:

One needs VS.NET 2003 to utilize the Report Designer.

Reporting Services - Installation Question

Hi,
Can I set up RS and then install VB.NET 2003 at a later time to add the
Report Designer functionality?
Thanks
Jerryyes. After you install the IDE just re-run the RS installer and select the
development tools.

Reporting Services - credentials error.

Hi everyone.

I have created a report in RS and it works fine (am invoking from VB.Net - windows forms).

However, I have copied the report into a new one as I need a very similar looking report to be called from the same application, but if I attempt to invoke it in the same way as the first I get the following error:

"An attempt was made to set credentials for a data source '<name>' associated with thre report. Report data source settings are specified in a way that prevens credentials from being submitted to the report server."

I am passing the credentials like so:

Dim cc As New DataSourceCredentials
Dim cred() As DataSourceCredentials = {cc}

cred(0).Password = "*****"
cred(0).UserName = "****"
cred(0).DataSourceName = "**DSNAME**"

Any help would be gratfully recieved, as this is driving me completely nuts.

Thanks in advance.Anyone? Someone must have come across this before.

I am slowly banging my head against a wall here ;-)

Reporting Services

I was trying to install Reporting Services on Windows Server 2003. but
it seems to need Visual Studio .Net 2003 installed.

I just can't download .Net 2003 anywhere.is it any different than
Visual Studio .net?

is there another way to install Reporting Services for SQL Server 2000.

we cannot get Sql Server 2005 coz we have Great Plains 7.0 running on
our server and that 2005 is not supported yet(I would think)

thank you.You can install it without Visual Studio, you only need Visual Studio
if you want to author reports.|||oh really?

I thought you need Visual Studio .Net 2003 for the Report Designer
feature.

thanks.

Reporting Services

I must install several reports on a production server and I dont have VS.NET
to deploy them.
Is there another way?
Thanks
RicardoIf you go to Report Manager on your RS server, there should be a button
to upload a report ("Upload Report"), which can be assigned to the
various report groups you have set up.
